Wednesday April 6th Systems and Network Disruptions

Wednesday, April 6th, starting at approximately 7PM, the LRCCD systems and network experienced various IT system outages and/or delays. The root cause appeared to be a Denial of Service (DOS) attack originating from Ireland, with many connection attempts and many using bit torrent protocol. In response, connections originating from this country, as well bit torrent connections, were blocked and all systems were restored to normal activity and response times at approximately 9:30pm. DOIT is continuing to monitor the systems and networks.

Full Outlook clients are unable to get email from outside of the Los Rios networks

Any users running the full Outlook client from outside of Los Rios (home network, Panera, Starbucks, etc.), will not get any updates on their Outlook client until they return to a Los Rios network. If they are running their client in cached mode, they will see any cached emails and be able to queue up their responses. Those emails will deliver when the device connects to a Los Rios network.

Due to the wild fires yesterday, the fiber optic cables to the Natomas Center were damaged beyond repair. Currently, there is very limited access. We have been working with PG&E to acquire alternate fiber paths until new cable can be installed. Connectivity problem partly fixed

Updated information: The fiber cut was in the primary Internet connection for all the District and College locations. The secondary Internet connection provided an alternate path for most locations, but a configuration problem caused some to still not connect. Los Rios Internet Connection Unavailable

From approximately Noon to 1:00 pm Monday 3/16/15, the District Internet provider (CENIC) experienced an outage due to an issue between Oakland and Sunnyvale. Most of the K-20 schools in Northern California were affected. During the outage, Los Rios Colleges and the District office could communicate to each other, but no Internet traffic was allowed to the outside. Therefore D2L, eServices, and other in-District systems were available from on campus, but not from the outside.

The network outage at FLC affected District access to OGS and the PeopleSoft Financial System (FSPRD) from approximately 10:45 am to 11:17 am. District access to these two systems has now been restored.

Emergency update to Telephone system to correct problem with Call Forwarding

For Los Rios employees using the Unified Messaging (UM) system, the call forwarding to 3602 (UM Subscriber Access number) is not working.

An emergency correction to the system will be completed immediately today. The voice-mail system will be unavailable from approximately 10:30 - 11:00 today. This includes accessing voice-mail, leaving voice-mail messages, and automated-attendant actions. The phone system will function normally, other than voice-mail. We apologize for the interruption.

Network outage Natomas, McClellan, Ethan Way

A contractor working on Hurley Way damaged a fiber cable that includes the circuits connecting Natomas Center, McClellan Center, and Ethan Way to the District Office and the internet.

The outage began about 2 pm Wednesday.

A repair crew is working over night to make a temporary repair. A scheduled outage will be required to achieve a permanent repair.

PeopleSoft Campus Solutions Failure August 28, 2012

Analysis has shown that the root cause of the failure was a configuration error in the web servers used by this system. After correction, the web servers are handling the load. Additional testing and tuning is ongoing to assure that the system is prepared for the next peak workload period during Spring 2013 registration in late November and early December.

PeopleSoft Campus Solutions

The system ran successfully through the late afternoon and evening hours. By 7 pm August 27, ten additional servers had been built and deployed to support the workload.

We opened access at 6:00 am this morning to provide a more gradual initiation of load on the system. Please contact the help desk if system performance is slow or if there is an inability to log in.

The Campus Solutions application is not supporting the workload today. The symptom is inability to log in and very slow performance.

On Monday, July 9th and July 10th, a small subset of users were unable to get their Outlook client to connect with the Exchange servers. The problem is resolved.

The address book service on one of the CAS servers failed to start Restarting it resolved the issue. Monitoring on both Sitescope and the F5 load balancer will keep this from being an issue again.
Root_Cause: During a reboot from a Windows Update some Exchange services took longer than normal to start. The address book service gave up waiting for the other services to start and just did not start.

One NetApp filer (DO-FAS2) experienced the inability to contact either redundant switch. As a result all NFS and iSCSI clients lost connection to NAS storage for approximately 20-30 minutes. The situation started Friday July 20th about 11:47am and ended a

The initial problem was resolved by a failover to a standby NAS filer.
Root_Cause: Not known at this time. Cases are open with both the switch vendor and SAN vendor.

The D2L problem that occurred this past Sunday (January 15th) occurred from 7:00 am to approximately 2:45 pm. It affected four of the 12 web servers in the pool, so approximately 1/3 of the users may have seen the problem. We have narrowed down the cause and are implementing measures to avoid the impact until a permanent correction is implemented in the D2L software. A problem occurred on Sunday 10/3/10 with D2L, affecting navigation (nav) bars. The problem began at 9:00 am following the maintenance period and was discovered & resolved at approximately 4:30 pm. We apologize for the difficulties this created for students and faculty.

There is also a separate problem with quizzes. It is a known problem and we have a D2L trouble ticket open regarding the problem. Additional information will be distributed when a resolution is released.

eServices, D2L, District/College web pages, and some other services were unavailable for approximately 1/2 hour due to an outage of network equipment. We apologize for the disruption.

Most of the problems with slowness and lack of access were resolved this morning. We have been and are still working on some of the more difficult problems. System maintenance completed

The weekend work on the Student Administration and Human Resource system (including eServices, Employee Self-Service) was completed successfully. The system was made available at the normal time Monday morning at 7:00 am.

D2L internal mail not routed

A problem occurred with a mail relay server, causing several systems to not have mail delivered. Mail sent from inside D2L (via class list etc.) was not delivered if sent between 6:00 am Tuesday 6/22 through noon Wednesday 6/23. Mail from Exchange and iMail was not affected. Please resend any emails that you suspect would have been affected.

D2L problems corrected!

The problems with Turnitin and enrollment updates have been corrected and did not require an outage of D2L. We will be re-processing the enrollments (adds/drops) during the day today, as well as the Turnitin assignments that queued up prior to the correction. Also, any new Turnitin assignments should now flow correctly from D2L.

D2L enrollment problems

The
D2L problems reported yesterday (with Turnitin) now appear to be more widespread. We are currently researching a problem that appears to be preventing enrollments (adds, drops) from being processed correctly. We are using all possible resources on this issue, including D2L support. We expect the problem to be fixed this morning, which will require a very brief outage to implement the correction. D2L Problems with Turnitin

We are getting reports of problems with submissions to Turnitin (the plagiarism software) through Desire2Learn. We are currently investigating the problem. It is not yet clear whether the problem only affects certain classes or all classes with Turnitin assignments. We will provide further information, as it is resolved.
